M i n t p a w My eyes are open wide By the way I made it through the day. I watch the world outside By the way I'm leaving today. Mintpaw paced in a frustrated circle around the Medicine Cat den. She sneezed, but that was probably because of the vivid smells of all the herbs in the den that were clouding her nostrils. The smells were so familiar and comforting to her. This was what had initially sparked her interest in becoming a medicine cat. Each plant had its own name, unique smell, and each could be used in healing every sickness, injury, or ailment this wide world could dish out. Only the medicine cat and his apprentice had the knowledge to use them the right way. She sniffed and pawed gingerly at all the herbs. Yes, yes, they were all in their proper piles. And there was an ample supply of each, but burdock root was a little low. However, the rat population in ShadowClan's territory was down. But how could Mintpaw complain that none of ShadowClan was ill, even if it meant most of her days were spent idle? This was why she was so anxious for Skyfire to come. Mintpaw wanted something to do to to rid her of boredom. Maybe today would be a good day to brush up on her hunting and battle skills! Mintpaw was looking forward to that. Now where in StarClan's name is Skyfire? [/i][/size][/blockquote]

"Alright then. Good hunting!" Skyfire called over his shoulder as he slipped into the Medicine cats den. He had been just outside of the camp, talking to an incoming patrol, and a while later, a hunting patrol that was leaving. He felt light hearted and happy lately, talking to anyone and everyone, enjoying the warm days...and he finally had something to ocupy some of his time since the arrival of his first apprentice. "Mintpaw?" he called softly once he thought of the young she-cat. As he padded deeper into the moist den, scents of herbs and roots filled his senses, welcoming him. His tail curled delightedly as he slid down the familiar slope to where his nest--and now Mintpaw's--rested. "Ah, there you are, my girl! How are we today?" he purred in a fatherly tone. As his mis-matched eyes swept the room, his good mood dampened a little when he realized that the edges of his vision were always blurry, no matter how many times he blinked or looked away. 40 moons isn't that old... he thought briefly, before he focused on Mintpaw again, his eyes sparkling.

M i n t p a w "Hello Skyfire!" Mintpaw meowed happily with a dip of her head in polite greeting. She pressed her muzzle up against Skyfire's with fondness. Was an apprentice supposed to be this fond of her mentor, the way a daughter is of her father? "What fine weather.." she commented absently. "Oh, yes! We have plenty herbs, I've seen to that. And there isn't much to do so.." Mintpaw comtemplated how to ask her question. She thought today would be an ideal day to practice essential warrior skills with Skyfire, if he was up to it which he seemed to be. "Erm, would you take me out for some battle and hunting training today, Skyfire?" she asked politely with another dip of her head and a slight purr. Normally, Mintpaw was quiet and reserved, but she could be manipulative and charming when she needed to be.

Skyfire blinked in surprise. "Battle training? That's an unusual request from a medicine cat's apprentice," he drawled, absently smoothing down his white chest fur. "But I suppose we could. In times of trouble, its always good to have well-rounded cats," he said finally, grinning in that way that only cats could. "Im afraid Im a bit out of practice, and my eyesight is going with age, but I can still hunt a shrew, even in Leaf-bare," he announced proudly. He turned, and flicked his tail to signal that Mintpaw should follow. He strolled out of the medicine cat's den, pondering where he should take Mintpaw first. Perhaps the forest, close to the border? Or to the marsh, where they normally collected herbs? He decided it would be best to work in the pines, and set out determindly.

M i n t p a w Mintpaw nearly yowled with excitement at the prospect of hunting and battle training with her beloved mentor, and he seemed to be just as excited himself. But something was nagging at her mind, something that needed to be done before they could depart. Her stomach dropped with disappointment. Oh, that was right. This was the day the new deputy was to be announced! "Oh, I'm sorry I suggested training, Skyfire! I'd forgotten the new deputy's ceremony was today! I suppose we'd better head for the Treestump then," she mewed. Mintpaw sighed in disappointment. She had been really looking forward to training! But she supposed she was just as anxious to see who the new deputy would be. Mintpaw hoped it would be Sharpfang. He was the best cat for the job, a natural born leader.
